A bus service inspired by the success of budget airlines will carry passengers between cities for as little as 1 a journey.
The average cost of a ticket on the Megabus service will be 2 after the launch of a network of routes linking London with 12 other cities.
Passengers must book over the internet and travel on a doubledecker bus with 93 other people.
As with Ryanair and easyJet, they may have to travel at inconvenient times, and there will be no refund if their plans change.
Megabus, owned by Stagecoach, has promised to sell 20 per cent of its seats for 1.
It also claims 90 per cent of passengers will pay one-way fares of less than 3.
From 1 March, buses will run to cities including Birmingham, Bristol, Plymouth, Brighton, Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth.
