Thomson 'flies' into new airport

Postby Sazz on Wed Apr 21, 2004 2:55 pm

The first company to run flights from the Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield airport has been announced.
Peel Airports have confirmed a subsidiary of the Thomson group is to base five planes at the new airport.

Holiday makers will be able to jet off from the former RAF base in Finningley, near Doncaster to popular destinations.

Scheduled to open in spring 2005, the airport will cater for 2.3m passengers and 50,000 tonnes of freight each year by 2014.

The government gave the green light for the former RAF Finningley to be converted into a civilian airport last April.

The name Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield was announced on Tuesday for the 80m development.

The 900-acre airport and business zone site is owned by Peel Airports Limited, the company that broke new ground in 2002 by renaming Liverpool airport Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Robin Hood, who spent much of his life in the Doncaster area, shot ahead of other famous people with local links, when people were asked for suggestions as to what the airport should be called.

Peel Airports believes the deal will bring more investment into the region and create jobs.

Thomson 'flies' into new airport

Hi,

Well... no doubt they will operate little more than 100 flights from Doncaster next summer as its not a high yield airport like MAN or BHX. This will mean no based aircraft thus, they will have to position an aircraft into the airport for each service. They will also have to bus or fly crews in Doncaster to operate the flights which will also prove costly.

They should stick to what they know! Having said that, they don't know that much judging from my experiences with them in the past!

Thomson 'flies' into new airport

Hi,

MyTravel Lite will not fly from Doncaster as their main focus is Birmingham. They will still be existence and are indeed doing quiet well. They have just taken an extra aircraft to meet capacity as a matter of fact - an A321 which can hold 220 passengers.

I don't believe 'BrianJackson' knows enough about the world of travel or business to make a comment like that. Especially when MyTravel will enter back into profit next year and will leave Thomas Cook and Thomson fighting there debts off!

He may not be an expert, but it's a widely held opinion, especially if you were a shareholder?
