| You will be going there at the hottest time of the year - July and August can be incredibly warm. I live by the sea so have the breeze which you really need in that heat but if you're going into the Sahara it will be so much hotter. July & August in Sousse area you can expect high 40's (hot enough to explode wine bottles in outside cupboard!!)
I visited Djerba 3 weeks ago - temps in Sousse 16 degress and raining, and in Djerba/Matmata area between 20-24 degrees - quite a difference.
I wanted to revisit Djerba and see Matmata for the first time. I made Djerba my base but from there, there was a lot of driving involved. You can cross to Djerba on the ferry from Djorf to Ajim or else take the southern 'Roman Road' link to the mainland - only about 7 kms. Went as far as Toujane & Matmata, but would have been better staying in Douz which is amazing. Drove down to the last town in Tunisia before Libya, Ras Jedir, just beyond Ben Gardane. On the way back visited Zarzis and Gabes. (Have just uploaded some pix of Djerba to www.tunisia.com)
I suppose it depends on how much time you have and what exactly you want to see. I like to do the south in the winter months because of the weather. I'm a sun addict and cope with the heat really well but not sure if I could cope with July heat in the desert. In two weeks, I would think about doing either the south west or south east but to try to do it all in that time won't do it justice.
I always stay in hotels - this time Mouradi Menzel Jerba but would not particularly recommend it. If your family are young, I would suggest hotels.
Hope this helps
