Re: Scared Of Tunisia
Wow Meeya! I hope you and your sister were Ok for the rest of the holiday!
I have been twice (I'm also a young blonde) once at age 15, once at age 18... when I first went, I only spoke a bit of french (hello/goodbye/do you speak english/sorry I don't understand/no thanks/ go away/ leave me alone)... I learnt the last 2 during my time there! I was constantly hassled by the life guard at the hotel pool! He kept inviting me over to the beach for you know what! I couldn't leave my sunlounger to go into the pool without my mum... until at the begining of the 2nd week, I told him to leave me alone, and that I was only 15. He backed off straight away, and treated me like everyone else.
Going into the town of Mahadia, not a touristy town, I made a point of not dressing provocitivly, and wore a t shirt and long cotton trousers... I had my backside pinched by 20-60 year old men! Then we got forced into a shop (like Meeya) we insisted we didn't want anything, there was a young man, and an older man in there, the younger man stood behind us so we couldn't walk out, in the end, my mum grabbed my hand and went to walk out. The young man grabbed my top, then my other hand, and the older man grabbed my chest!
We bravly returned 3 years later... and had a fabulous time! I still look the same as I did at 15 (I looked 20 at 15) so was more mature, and the fact that I had A level french under my belt was a big benefit! Laughing is the best way to keep unwanted attention at bay... if you laugh when they're trying it on (99% of them are harmless!) it'll be a simple "Very funny.... OK goodbye"
I'm returning next year with my friends from Uni... getting shoes from Sousse (wow!) They leave kids alone... if they know they're kids. A basic "Allez vous en" will be enough... if they start hassteling kids, without realising they're kids, a simple "elle/il a [age] ans" or get the kid to say "je suis enfant!" they should back off!
