Currency in Turkey 2009 NOT THE EURO !!

Postby HW Jan.C on Sat Sep 27, 2008 11:40 pm

As far as we know Turkey will NOT be using the Euro next year. There will be some changes to their own currency,
banknotes and coins will be renamed as TL and Kurus and they will enter into circulation on January 1st, 2009 with new designs, sizes and enhanced security features.

Jan,

We are calling into Turkey on our cruise next month, is it ok to use Euros for small purchases like, a couple of beers or glasses of wine.

We are doing a ships tour but stopping of in town after for a few hours.

I am sure they will be pleased to see your Euros hun. There shouldnt be a problem but just ask before you order in case you end up washing up in Turkey as well as at home :).
Where in Turkey are you going to be visiting ? and have you been before ?

Hi Jan,

Yes been before few years ago, Marmaris I think it was. Ships tend to just stay a few hours in some ports and unless we are doing a trip we tend to stay by the bar in those.

Off to Venice, Bari, Olympia, Instanbul, Dubrovnik but have 5 hours in Izmir which I believe is in Turkey. got plenty of Euros & dollars so thanks I'll make do with them.

Don't do washing up now brought a cat so just put things on floor next morning they are clean.

Have a lovely time ( again ) and if you tell people your going to be spending money on shopping you may gather a small crowd round you to see the ceremonial opening of the wallet,as I am led to beleive its an event that may only happen once every blue moon :).

Oh yes they are happy to take £ and Euros, you get better deals than if you use TL. but as it is the TL is staying the currency and not changing to Euros in 2009 as some people have reported.
