Noah's Ark - Mount Arrarat

Postby justine parker on Thu Jul 28, 2005 11:42 am

Hi there

Off to Icmeler in 8 days (i'm on countdown now) with friends and they were quite interested in Noah's Ark resting place on Mount Arrarat. I know it is a mountain and therefore you can't just get a minibus there for the day but does anyone know if there are any "museums" or "information centres" that we can visit.

I have heard all sorts of stories about people trying to climb it and being shot at by the military.

I'll await your responses and hope they come in "2 by 2"!!!!!!

Thanks

The distance from Icmeler to Mount Ararat will be way too much for you to travel for a visit while on holiday, I dont think there are any information centres around the icmeler area that deals with Mount Ararat, There is Ephesus lots closer to you and plent of historical sites nearer for you to visit, Have you tried an internet search for visitor information to Mount Ararat, I think it is near to the border of Iraq/Turkey.Sound very interesting though.

Hi PQ

Thanks for you response. Never even though about the distance. I know Turkey is a very historical country so will look around the web for other places of interest.

Don't quite fancy the idea of being so close to Iraq so i'll tell our friends. After all we are going on holiday to relax and maybe take in a few sights not mountaineering for one.

thanks again

Take a look at Explorers of Ararat web site it was updated this year.

But as Jan said its is on the border with Iraq, and does contain a few old time BANDITS.

Ha! Ha! Unfortunately no it is not one of my boat trips. Would love to visit there myself but have not had the time to do it.

Mount Ararat is far east of Turkey close to the Iraq Border. Eastern Turkey can be unsafe for foreign travellers and caution should be taken at all times.

The journey would be much to far from Icmeler and a flight from Istanbul to Dyarbakar would be the closest airport then a long travel from there.

Have a great time in Icmeler and come into my office for lots of information on the area!
