Postby audge2000 on Wed Jun 04, 2008 5:49 pm

Hi, I'm off to Liverpool for the weekend with a mate and I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever been?
Whats the night life like?
Is food/drink expensive?
Is there much to do during the day?

Can you recommend a Bar, club or Restaurant?

Thanks in Advance :)

sorry can't help you - never been

BUT

Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture (or something) so there's probably been lots of cash spent on it and loads to do.

went to liverpool ast may for 4 days mainly for anfield - its a beautiful place we stayed in travel lodge in st helens - easy access to liverpool, wigan, and about 30 mins from trafford centre. have kids so cant comment on nightlife, sorry.

In fact couple of weeks ago my 8 yr old son decided to leave home at 530am and try to catch a bus there with just 10 - absolutely distraught at the time but beginning to see the funny side now, not funny when the police wake you up with a very sheepish looking little lad in tow!!

Anyway, i wouldnt hesitate in going back, wish we could have stayed longer.

Lots of bars and stuff to choose from in Liverpool. Alot based around Concert Square, where you will find Walkabout, Lloyds bar etc most of the puns/bars/clubs are all with in a staggering distance.

Food can vary from cheap and cheerful to Gastro expensive, there is a HUGE variety. So there will be something to suit all budgets

Lots to do in the day, shopping is excellent, museums, docklands area, take a trip out to the Wirral. West Kirby and Hoylake are very nice. The Merseytrains and all the transport, make it very easy to get about

Have a wicked time

WEEKEND IN LIVERPOOL - REVIEW NEEDED

I stayed in Liverpool in april and was absolutely delighted. I stayed just off the motorway in a nice hotel which served an all you like buffet breakfast for 9.99 and this was great. The hotel was something like the devonshire hotel.
Car parking is really expensive in liverpool we found it cheaper to leave the car at the hotel and use the local busses and that was pretty regular and reliable. I had inside info from a local friend who was able to tell me the best places to get off, but i would say head for town and you can walk most places of any major interest from there.
As for the day we wandered around town and took a stroll down and round the docks on the first day. I was quiet lucky with the nightlife as i was meeting up with a local. We went down to Mathews Street and pretty much did a pub crawl and ended and started at the lloyd's bar. I thought all the prices were pretty reasonable, no major difference to any town really. The CAVERN CLUB is a must see just because of the music and the atmosphere it gives off. we were charged about 20p for entry( big wow!)
The following day we took a bus into town again and went on an opentop tour it was ok because you could hop on and off or just keep going round. The museum at the start was free and although most of it was on the beetles it took you past all the other landmarks too.

During the day head for Brownlow Hill, Liverpool museum is there and it is completely free to enter, and has some very interesting exhibits, next door is the Walker Art Gallery again free and some smashing paintings in there.

If you head up Mount Pleasant you will come to Hope Street at one end of the Hope Street there is the Anglican Cathedral which I think is now the biggest in Europe and free to enter, the other end of Hope Street is Paddy's Wigwam - the Catholic Cathedral- and also free to visit.
Whilst in this are find the Philharmonic pub, some of the best toilets in a pub you will ever see, and the bar is interesting.

If you go down to Lime Street you can visit St. Georges Hall, and the back of the Hall there is St. Johns Gardens nice for wander.

Down forget to head to the Pier Head to see the three Graces, I can only remember the Liver buildings I cannot remember the names of the other two. From the Pier Head I think you can still do a tour on the Royal Iris ferry of the mersey. From the Pier Head you can walk to the Albert Docks and the boat museum.

Night life I think the previous post covered most of it, you cannot go far wrong if you head for Mathew Street.

Don't forget to head out to Anfield or Goodison depending on where your loyalties lie and you should be able to get the bus from the Pier Head and visit the football grounds, in fact if you visit one of them then walk through Stanley Park you can visit the other one.
