RV Holidays - Reccomendations?

Postby 300162 on Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:57 pm

Hi - Thinking of taking the family to america, hiring a RV and doing a bit of touring (See as much as we can).

Does anyone have any reccomendations, tips, things to watch out for, good companies etc. Is it best to do it fully DIY or enlist so local knowledge for information.

Obviously the country is so vast and cant do it all, so where could we cram most into two weeks. The kids are 17 and 13 so they won't want to be driving continuously. Hence will need a mixture of things to do.

Hope you can help.

RV Holidays - Reccomendations?

Postby Mr Grumpy on Fri Jan 04, 2008 11:26 pm

Hi, we did the RV thing in 2006, the best holiday we have ever had, we are going to do it again this year!
We booked the full thing through a travel agent, United Vacations was the company, we flew with United Airlines into Boston, hired the RV with Cruise America, picked it up in Massachusetts and toured New England for 13 nights. Our boys were 6 and 4 at the time and they loved it! we toured Plymouth Mass, into New Hampshire, the White mountains and the Lakes areas and over to Acadia national park in Maine which was fantastic, then back down the coast into New Hampshire.
I used Frommers guide for RV Campgrounds in the USA to find ideal places to stay and booked the reservations well in advance, 3-4 months, to get the best possible spaces for the RV, as this is really popular in the States.
The RV we hired was a 31ft C class (not the "bus" type), with a double bed over the cab and a double bed in a seperate bathroom at the back.
This we found was great, as we didn't have to make up beds in the living area for the boys and we could still sit up when they were asleep.
The campgrounds we used were clean, friendly and everybody cooks outside, so our boys were made up having a fire every night!
I bought AAA road maps from Amazon, they cost about 2 each and where really good, another thing you can try is mapquest.com they have routfinders on there which show all the road signs etc you will see, you can't get lost!!!
I think we will go DIY this year, get seperate flights and hire the RV via the internet, try http://www.rvusa.com/ and look at RV rentals.
We will be going back to New England, not only is it beautiful, but we have relatives there, so we may be a bit biased.
Best of luck, you will love it!

How did you find driving in towns?
Was it easy to find somewhere to park etc?

RV Holidays - Reccomendations?

Hi Jace,

Except for the major towns/cities i.e Boston/ New York/ Seattle/ LA.
driving in the states is very easy particularly so in New England/ Forida.

Parking a RV is not so easy but can be done/ some hires also include a small compact car which hooks on the back for driving into towns from hook-up point or overnight stays.
Cruising is like 'Being in the Garden of Eating'
