Excursions from Naples

Hi

Visiting Naples on the Thomson Spirit next week, and we are really keen to visit both Vesuvius and Pompeii in one day. It doesn't seem to be offered as a ship excursion, so we will have to arrange it independently. Has anyone done this successfully?

We stopped in Naples earlier this year - it is possible to DIY both Versuvius and Pompeii - but whether it can easily be done in one day is doubtful. Although we didnt go to Pompeii as it is HUGE and would take all day to appreciate it. We opted for the smaller, but just as fantastic Herculaneum. Just a 15 minute train ride away from port. This site is also closer to Versuvius - and there is plenty of taxi business there trying to persuede you to let THEM take you up the mountain.

We DIDNT do both - having spent all morning wandering around Herculaneum then to have taxi drivers doing battle over us - we chose to return to ship BY TRAIN... all good fun though !
