Due to go next week and need some advice on excursions. Which ports are easy to do on your own and which ones do you recommend I book an excursion. I really want to see Positano and the Amalfi coast - my thinking is that it would be best to book this as an excursion. Any tips appreciated thanks.

Redbird,

Give us your ports of call and maybe we can help.

In general most 'Med' port are okay for DIY Rome or perhaps Naples the exception for beginers.

Hi Redbird,

All those are fairly easy as DIY, for the local sights, all have taxi/mini-buses outside dock gates should you wish to go further afield.

Naples is also posible but if you want to understand Pompelii then a ships tour is worth the money, as it can get crowded with long queues outside.

Cannes is lovely to walk into, with plenty to see quite close to where you dock, normally tender, but really there is no rush to get ashore as you will have time to chill out, in one of the many bars harbour side.

Have a great cruise, would be interested on how good Island is now it belongs to Thomson.

Thanks for the info tenpin. Do you think the Amalfi Coast and Positano is doable on my own? Even if I do just one excursion my thinking is that is the one to go for. To be honest, I don't know what to expect on the Island Escape - I've read so many reviews my head is spinning - some great and some not so great. The choice of cruise was not mine so out of my hands. I'm a bit fussy so we'll have to wait and see lol!
