Hi, could anyone tell me if you can get around Stansted Airport without using escalators and lifts?. Is there stairs to get upstairs? or to the departure lounge?. Hubby has a morbid fear of both, getting him on the plane is the only thing i want to have to worry about!!.
Many thanks for your help

Have you looked at the BAA Stansted airport website? Airport websites usually give a map of the facilities, etc available. Also you could get the airport `phone number and ring them. Do they have a first floor or just a ground floor?
Worth checking out website.

Hi Kirsty,
I have flown from stansted a fair few times and cant remember there being any stairs at all. The whole airport layout is on one floor. The only thing I can think of that's may be involving stairs is the stairs to the plane but most of the ones I have been on all have walk ways to the plane.

Thanks for your reply that makes me feel better. I looked on the website and it made it look like there was two floors.
Stairs are fine it's escalators that are the problem he had a really bad accident on one as a child and nothing will get him on one again!!!
I might just give them a ring Wills, thanks for your help

Robbydooo I'm confused with your response as you cannot have a walkway to the plane unless you have climbed stairs in the first place. I am, of course, assuming you mean a walkway straight onto the plane. Also you say the whole airport is on one floor so a walkway cannot be used at stansted and so must be an outside walk across the airport tarmac and up the outside mobile stairs which are moved once all passengers, etc are on board. If this is the case take a warm coat with you, Kirsty, as you could be stood in the cold/wet for a long time whilst all passengers take their seats. Best of luck Kirsty.

I could well be wrong but I remember that the transit trains you get on take you to terminals that are off the ground. To be honest I rarely pay any attention but thats how I remember it

Thanks anyway for all your help, it's not something you think about when you have no fears, it's just something that you do automatically. Who thinks about escalators or lifts normally, you just go in without a thought don't you?.
I have no fears but i have to think ahead sometimes for him,but as someone said going on the escalator will be a doodle compared to the flight. Maybe we might conquer two things in one hit!!

If there were escalators there, in the event of a fire, don't they close escalators down? So, and I'm just thinking out loud here, there would be stairs to access other floors if there were any?
Failing that, I would use the lift
Please make sure you come back and tell us.

Hiya all,
Bex is right, due to H & S issues you must have access by stairs in case of fire where all electricity could be down, therefore both Lifts and Escaltors would be out of action.
This also applies on ships all lifts are shut down during boat drill and muster staitons. (with one exception for wheelchair users.)
